The Editor: Where is the ideal location for a Drug Rehabitional Centre in Tobago? Is it on the sea or in the sky? That may be vision 20/20, but it is not reality. Never have I seen birds or fishes addicted to drug, so that idea must be struck down immediately.
On a more serious note, drug use, its abuse and addition not to mention drug trafficking, is destroying countless number of lives, families and communities on the island and in the country in general.
Communities don't say, 'let's establish a drug block here or there, or in this place or that.' Yet they exist. But the irony of this is, even with the full knowledge of illicit drug activity taking place in their village no one complains to have them remove. At best we grumble or murmur a bit but we are mostly tolerate or silent on this issue. We simply look the other way.
Now, on a positive note with a positive intervention for a positive change, which will offer help for persons afflicted by substances abuse in the establishment of a Drug Rehabition Centre to be named 'The Good Life Place', this is met with opposition from communities, which seem to be indifferent about the idea.
Let's look at some facts. The purposed site for 'The good life place' is ideally situated on a hill which consists of four acres of land far removed from the main street of Goodwood; the village chosen for the centre.
The closest residents/neighbours are the green forest trees and the birds and animals in the wild. It should also be noted that a structure already exists on the property and a partial lease arrangements obtained for the intended Rehab. Centre.
With the establishment of a Drug Rehab Centre, we hope our youths and persons addicted to substances can rehabilitate and become useful and productive members of society once again.
Having lived in Scarborough most of my life and witness the fast and rapid growth of the drug addicts population, we are already behind time with regards to a drug Rehab Centre.
As citizens we have a responsibility to protect ourselves and to care for the less fortunate among us. It is my belief that the current upsurge in robberies and violent crimes are to a large extent drug related. We seem more inclined to intervene at the penal level or at our courts, rather than before.
I therefore challenge us as respectable, responsible citizens and persons who have the power to do 'good', please help to advance this process. Do not be stumbling blocks. Your concerns may have good grounds but use them to ensure a high quality standard Drug Rehabitional Centre for Tobago.
Let's help persons affected by drug addiction and create a better society for us all.
Let's not wait, we are already quite late. |
